i care so much about fictional morality and ethics but not in a lame ass “is this character/ship problematic” way. i’m cringe for other reasons.

i want to know what the court proceedings for a trial where the defendant claims mind control or possession look like. what’s the worst crime you can commit in a world where people can cast spell of curse your entire bloodline over a careless insult at the farmer’s market. how are magical prisoners treated. what kind of values would a society whose honour code is built on glory through battle and warmongering uphold. what’s public opinion on the death penalty.

tag from throughdarkeningskies: "#what do domestic violence proceedings look like in a soulmate au?"ALT

This is crazy. I wonder if there’s some sort of historical basis for the rural landowners in America being wealthy reactionaries who just make other people do their work for them

i actually want to expand on this point for a second: conservatives very often don’t perceive their beliefs as hypocritical because they don’t believe in equality. they don’t believe that black people are the same as white people, or that women are the same as men, or that foreigners are the same as their neighbors, or that rich people are the same as poor people, or that THEY are the same as YOU.

‘isn’t it hypocritical to say a woman should cover up her legs when you, a man, are wearing shorts?’ not if you think men and women have fundamentally different bodies and that their exposed skin serves completely different purposes.

‘isn’t it hypocritical to complain about homeless people on welfare but not bat an eye at all the government subsidies your farm rakes in?’ no! hardworking farmers are the backbone of america, no matter how much tax payer money they blow through to toodle their fuckin tractors around the cornfield, and bums are vermin.

‘isn’t it hypocritical to freak out at the idea of trans women invading bathrooms to creep on children when you keep voting for politicians that are repeatedly accused of sexually abusing underage girls?’ not if you refuse to believe that any of the politicians actually did that, OR that any of the trans women never actually did that.

‘isn’t it hypocritical’– look. it’s like this. if a good guy and a bad guy do the exact same thing, it’s good when the good guy does it and bad when the bad guy does it. this is a collection of christian notions gone very wrong–that the devil can do things that look good just to trick people, and that sometimes doing the right thing hurts and has sad consequences–but it feels great to believe, so people are just going to keep doing it.

it’s fine that so many republican politicians have raped so many girls that don’t count and aren’t real. it’s fine that cops use our money to kill the poor people we deny the money to be safe and healthy. it’s fine that women are paid less, that blacks are policed more, that refugees are shot for approaching our borders. it’s fine. it’s right.

they do not want a world in which everyone is equal. they do not perceive that as fair. they want this world, in which everyone is respected according to how human they are, and the measuring stick starts at their feet.

sorry don’t usually rb politics but this^^

Saw a video explaining how simplistic arguments sound more correct such that a simple lie has more sway than a complex truth. Because understanding a simple lie is more comforting than acknowledging that you aren’t amongst the most knowledgeable people on a given topic.

If real world issues like climate change or school shootings or giving rights to oppressed groups means acknowledging that parts of the status quo are flawed, it’s much easier to convince yourself the issues aren’t real and choose not to believe in it.

… this is all true, but there’s a huge counterpoint to this that I feel like we all knew was Social Justice 101 five years ago and suddenly everyone has utterly forgotten.

You don’t expose right-wing hypocrisy to convince the right-wing. You do it for the silent watching majority.

The person who has made the “immigrants are stealing yor jobs share if u agree” meme on Facebook is not going to be convinced by you saying “That’s not true.” But, and I realise this is an unpalatable truth that nobody wants to hear anymore - most people are not ontologically evil maniacs trying to murder you in your bed, and this even includes most people who keep voting right wing. Most of them are under-educated in social issues and living in small social bubbles (you are also living in a small social bubble btw), and when everyone they know on social media is saying “I lost my job/I can’t find work/my hours have been cut” and then they get shown a bunch of memes about immigration numbers and told that these things are related, they agree, because that seems to make sense, and everyone is saying it.

And THOSE people are who you’re really talking to when you say “So immigrants are lazy non-workers who are stealing our jobs at the same time?” Those are the people you’re talking to when you say “You lost your job because your boss is a dickhead, not because a brown person fleeing oppression stole it somehow.” Because those are the people who can, actually, be convinced.

I just… remember Brexit? Cambridge Analytica stole that election, because they managed to FLOOD Facebook’s older demographic with anti-Europe memes. They were even doing things like posting polls with the EU flag on saying “Should tea be banned?” with the Yes and No buttons in the colours and fonts of the Remain and Leave camps. Those older people were the ones who needed to see a flood of “This is utter brainwashing bullshit” comments. But they didn’t, because too many leftists went “You can’t convince the right wing shrug emoji” and so Leave won by half a percent a vote that six months later had Leave voters clamouring for a second election because, by their own admission, they hadn’t realised what they were voting for.

And we used to say this all the time on Tumblr, and now, suddenly, we’re moving into a period of actively spitting on anyone who exposes bigoted hypocrisy because DON’T YOU KNOW THEY DON’T CARE AND WON’T BE CONVINCED, CLEARLY YOU’RE JUST DOING IT BECAUSE YOU WANT CLOUT, YOU’RE SO STUPID. The backlash on here to Jon Stewart challenging a creepy transphobe over the trans school athletics ban was absolutely insane. Fam, you’ve got parents being indoctrinated and brainwashed by a very strong campaign making them believe predators are lurking around every corner to steal their child’s future success if they don’t get to play netball. Those are the people who need to see the debunking, so when Karenazi at the school gates tells them they need to inspect a child’s genitals because she has short hair, they can tell her to fuck off and die in a fire.

They weren’t happy noises.

They were polite and reasonable noises! The sound of protocol being followed! Negotiation and compromise!

This machine allows anyone to work for minimum wage for as long as they like. Turning the crank on the side releases one penny every 4.97 seconds, for a total of $7.25 per hour. This corresponds to minimum wage for a person in New York. This piece is brilliant on multiple levels, particularly as social commentary. Without a doubt, most people who started operating the machine for fun would quickly grow disheartened and stop when realizing just how little they’re earning by turning this mindless crank. A person would then conceivably realize that this is what nearly two million people in the United States do every day…at much harder jobs than turning a crank. This turns the piece into a simple, yet effective argument for raising the minimum wage.

god damn

Ten years. Ten years I’ve been seeing this wonderful art piece, and STILL our minimum wage REMAINS at 7.25/hour.

Meanwhile, the cost of living has easily tripled.

And minimum wage wasn’t enough to cover it even before.
